"I like to be the observer of the world, and now the world is observing me.
Hội An is a port for artists. People visit and show me their music, and I am blown away.
July 2026
Summer Band Camp ended on 12 September at Roots Bar, with four new bands playing eight original songs, every one of them in front of a crowd for the first time. Vol. 2 is open to everyone. Meet your band on Sunday 4 October at Roots Bar: drop in any time 4-6pm, or sign up online. Sign ups close on 10 October.
"Strangers met, grouped into four bands and spent the next six weeks writing two original songs."
It started as something not too serious: a fun way to celebrate the end of summer and play something a bit different. Nobody chose who they played with. The bands were drawn at a meet your band night at Roots Bar on 31 July, and from there each one had to find a sound, write two songs and learn to play them together. Roots Bar held the whole thing, the practice sessions as well as the show.
Mosquito opened as a two piece, acoustic, with Quân and Dũng. Black Garlic brought rap and soul with Minh, Ly, Devon and Hicham. Chasing Rabbits played indie rock with Dũng, Rozz, Rachael and Devon, and Border Run closed the night with Jaretta, Dũng, Hicham and Andrew.
It was free and all ages, with a BBQ from 6pm and music from 8pm. Vol. 2 is coming, and it is open to everyone. The meet up is on Sunday 4 October at Roots Bar, and the next show is Sunday 15 November at 8pm.

Saturday nights in a garden lounge, and an open mic every other Thursday.
Art, culture and community under one roof, in a house wrapped in banana leaves. Every Saturday from seven the lounge fills with live music, and every other Thursday Lara Nova hosts an open mic for anyone ready to take a turn. Between the sets, the board games come out.
Two artists, one shared space. Nguyễn Trịnh Quang Minh is a painter from Hà Nội. Viviana Ruiz Gomez is an artist from Bogotá, Colombia. Mas Arroz is their home and working studio, a place for making art, hosting workshops and exhibitions, and bringing people together. Their work is on this edition's pages. A new visual artist features each edition.
